Shovel Knight Continue After Final Boss

Shovel Knight Dig features a true ending that can only be seen by completing an extensive list of tasks on your way to defeating Drill Knight. Because the list of to-dos won't be clearly presented to you in-game, it's nearly impossible to get the story's true ending organically.

In this Shovel Knight Dig guide, you'll be provided step-by-step instructions that'll help you reach Shovel Knight Dig's true ending so you can experience the additional narrative plot points.

Though it may go without saying, this guide contains major spoilers about Shovel Knight Dig's narrative. Read with caution.

True Ending

Force Altius into the Well

The first step in reaching Shovel Knight Dig's true ending is to force Altius into the well. Altius is Shield Knight's pet owl who can be found sitting on the sign to the right of the well.

To get the adorable owl into the well, bounce on his head once to make him leave his perch and he'll proceed to slowly fly around the screen. When he flies directly above the pit, bounce on his head a few more times to nudge him into the well. If done successfully, you'll see Altius fly alongside you when you dive into the pit.

Find Altius in Mushroom Mines

Next, you'll need to find Altius who will be hiding in one of the many side rooms scattered throughout Mushroom Mines. Altius can be resting in any of Mushroom Mines' three levels so don't get discouraged if you don't find him immediately.

However, if you clear Mushroom Mines and reach the boss battle against Spore Knight without locating the owl, you might as well reset your run since you've missed your chance to reach the true ending on this run.

Once you've found Altius, approach him and open the chest he's perched on. You can now complete Mushroom Mines normally, but try your best to collect as close to 1500 Gems as possible since you'll be doing some shopping soon.

In our tests, Altius was never hiding behind a door that required a Key to unlock. If you miss one of these areas, you'll likely still be able to find the brave owl.

Collect Four Cogs in Secret Fountain or Smeltworks

Once you've cleared Mushroom Mines you'll either be sent to Secret Fountain or Smeltworks. Regardless of the world, you'll need to collect four Cogs. Because every level only houses three Cogs, your first goal is to locate Chester. To find the merchant, search for the blue and gold lantern that'll be hanging from the sides of the well.

Purchase the "Cog on a String" Chester has for sale and you'll have your first Cog. Now you must descend through the level while ensuring to collect all three golden Cogs.

With four Cogs now in your inventory, clear your current level and Altius will use the Cogs to jam the Drill Capsule that typically gives you rewards. From here, you're free to clear the rest of the world normally.

After defeating the boss, Shield Knight and Altius will meet up with you before you progress to the next area. Instead of entering one of the round-three worlds, Magic Landfill or The Grub Pit, the duo will use the Drill Capsule to carve a path to the round-two world you haven't visited yet.

That is, if you were in Smeltworks you will now enter Secret Fountain but if you just left Secret Fountain you'll move into Smeltworks.

Make Three Sacrifices

Next, you'll need to discover statue rooms in each of the world's three levels and make a sacrifice at each statue. Like Chester, statue rooms can be located by finding blue and gold lanterns hanging from the well's sides. Though, the lanterns that hang outside of statue rooms are slightly less ornate than the ones that mark Chester's location.

After you've sacrificed an Accessory on all three levels, defeat the boss and Shield Knight will hand you a Skeleton Key before you enter Magic Landfill or The Grub Pit.

Open the Skeleton Door

Like other Keys, the Skeleton Key will follow behind you and fall from your grasp when you take damage. Thankfully, the Skeleton Key isn't fragile and you'll only need to ensure that you don't drop it in an inaccessible area. The Skeleton Key can open any lock but you'll only need it to open the Skeleton Door pictured above.

Inside you'll find the Omega Driver Relic. Altius will take the Relic, so complete Magic Landfill or The Grub Pit and Shield Knight will meet up with you again once you've entered the second round-three world.

Escort the Bomb to a Destructible Wall

As soon as you enter the following world, Shield Knight will hand you a massive red bomb that you'll need to escort to a destructible wall. The bomb has a 60-second timer so you'll need to move quickly but be careful not to miss the destructible wall.

You've likely encountered similar destructible walls on previous runs and it'll be made out of stone which tends to stand out more against Magic Landfill's brightly colored backdrop. Once you've used the bomb to destroy the wall, enter the revealed area and then clear the rest of the world.

Reach the Drill Knight Boss Battle

Now that you're finally in the final world, Drill Knight's Castle, the Omega Driver Relic will be added to your inventory. Before you do anything in Drill Knight's Castle this note is crucial.

Do not use the Omega Driver Relic under any circumstances. Omega Driver only has a single use and using it too early will negate all of your progress toward the true ending.

Destroy the Omega Saw

Not only should you not use the Relic while traversing the Castle, but you also cannot use it until Drill Knight's third phase. This phase will begin with Drill Knight clinging to the wall and changing the direction of the moving dirt. You'll be forced to feverishly dig to the right and eventually, the Omega Saw will emerge and chase you.

Wait until the Omega Saw is nipping at your heels and quickly turn to throw the Omega Driver into the Saw. The Omega Saw will be destroyed, that'll conclude the boss battle, and your health will be restored.

To destroy the Omega Saw, the saw must be open as seen in the image above.

Defeat Giant Drill Knight

The destruction of the Omega Saw will open another well and Drill Knight will be quick to dive in. Pursue him to enter the Crystal Core. While this area is free of enemies, you can still be harmed by crystal spikes so take extra care if you have no health upgrades.

At the bottom of the new well, Drill Knight and the rest of the Hexcavators will discover an amulet containing The Enchantress.

The Enchantress will go on to merge with Drill Knight and he'll be imbued with unimaginable power. This will trigger the game's true final boss battle.

Defeat the Giant Drill Knight by repeatedly striking the weak point in the center of his head. Once you've defeated the kaiju-sized villain, congratulations!

You have now completed Shovel Knight Dig's true ending and a golden statue will be built to honor the heroics displayed by both Shovel Knight and Shield Knight!
